Brummies v Hamners heat by heat 10/07/13

Apologies for the lateness..
SUPBRU

Sheila Bowen:
A very pleasant evening as we enter the stadium, albeit a good few degrees lower than the temperatures we have enjoyed for the past few days.
Disappointed to hear that Martin Smolinski hasn’t recovered from the injury he sustained on Monday while guesting for Poole and need to use rider replacement, Josh, Nico, Chris and Ben can share his rides.
Lakeside have their No.1 Peter Karlsson out with injury and have called on Kenneth Bjerre as a guest replacement.
Lakeside are formidable opponents and we will need to keep on our toes to prevent them taking a share of the points!

On with the meeting…

Brummies off gates 1 & 3 for heat 1.

 Heat 1.
Chris Harris r/r for Martin Smolinski.
Chris Harris and Jason Doyle out of the gate like rockets, Chris Harris, Jason Doyle, Kenneth Bjerre and Lewis Bridger the race order into the 1st bend. As they head down the back straight of the first lap Chris and Jason exchange places and 1 lap later Lewis Bridger passes Kenneth Bjerre to take up the chase behind Chris Harris. All to no avail though as the Brummie pair put on a quality show of team riding to take the 1st race with a fine 5-1!  brumscarf  brumscarf

Doyle, Harris, Bridger, Bjerre

Result 5-1

Heat 2.
As the riders enter the first bend the race positions are; Kevin Doolan in 1st, Nicolas Covatti in 2nd, Josh Auty in 3rd and Richard Lawson in 4th. Josh Auty charges around the outside to take the lead out of bend 2. Nicolas Covatti now in 3rd place keeps up the pace and passes Kevin Doolan on the home straight at the end of lap 1. The race concludes with Josh Auty taking the win with a good lead over the rest of the riders. Another superb 5-1!  brumscarf  brumscarf

Auty, Covatti, Doolan, Lawson

Result 5-1   (10-2)

Heat 3.
Into bend 1 Ben Barker, Sebastian Ulamek, Piotr Swiderski, Danny King the race order, out of the 2nd bend Danny King passes Piotr Swiderski. Sebastian Ulamek squeezes past Ben Barker on the home straight at the end of the first lap, Ben re-takes the lead on the 3rd bend of lap 2. Sebastian Ulamek still reeling from the great pass from Ben sees his 2nd place disappear as Danny King makes the pass on the home straight at the end of lap 2. Approx. 30 seconds of racing and it’s all over, the race won by the Brummies to make it 3 out of 3 maximum points!  clap1  clap1  clap1

Barker, King, Ulamek, Swiderski

Result 5-1   (15-3)

Heat 4.
A bit of movement at the start and Chris Harris is moving backwards as the tapes rise. I, and maybe even Chris Harris expected the riders to be called back, but it didn’t happen as the Hammers took positions 1 & 2 with Richard Lawson and Davey Watt with Chris Harris and Josh Auty stuttering into 3rd and 4 as they enter bend 1. Josh Auty is first to gather some better momentum and passes Chris Harris at the end of lap 1. Half a lap later as they enter the back straight of lap 2 Davey Watt passes Richard Lawson and it looked like being a Hammers 5-1 until Josh roared past Richard Lawson on the home straight at the end of lap 3 to split the Lakeside pair. Meanwhile Chris Harris never recovered from his poor start and finished in last place.

Watt, Auty, Lawson, Harris

Result   2-4   (17-7)

Heat 5.
Lakeside now 10 points down utilise the tactical ride facility and Kenneth Bjerre elected to ride in black & white helmet.
Lewis Bridger, Danny King, Kenneth Bjerre and Ben Barker the positions into bend 1, Ben Barker storms around the outside in a last to 1st move out of bend 2. Danny King fast tracking to last place, but he doesn’t go out of contention and manages to pass Lewis Bridger on the home straight at the end of lap 1, just 1 lap later in almost the same spot Lewis Bridger re-takes 3rd spot of Danny.
As I furiously scribbled the notes of these position changes I took my eyes off the race for a few seconds and as I looked back I was stunned to see that while Ben was still in 1st place, Danny still in 3rd place, Lewis Bridger was now in 2nd, and Kenneth Bjerre no longer with the potential to take 4 points out of the race, was now in last place for double nothing!
I was shocked that I had missed these race changes but doubly shocked with what happened next! As the riders approached the pits gate Lewis Bridger and Kenneth Bjerre appeared to be having an exchange of words, a heated discussion clearly taking place and moments later Lewis Bridger atempts to ‘head butt’ Kenneth Bjerre, followed by Kenneth Bjerre ‘taking a swing’ at Lewis Bridger… and there was me thinking they were on the same side!  redcard2

Barker, Bridger, King, Bjerre

Result   4-2   (21-9)

Heat 6.
Lakeside now 12 points down quickly use the opportunity of their 2nd tactical ride with Davey Watt taking the black & white helmet. Josh Auty to take rider replacement ride for Martin Smolinski.
Davey Watt storms out of the gate to take the lead into the 1st bend. As they exit bend 2 the positions are… Davey Watt, Jason Doyle, Kevin Doolan and Josh Auty. While Davey Watt extends his lead of the race Josh Auty chases hard behind Kevin Doolan and succeeds in making the pass at the end of the 2nd lap. Double points for Watts’ win but damage limitation further down the order.

Watts, Doyle, Auty, Doolan

Result   3-6   (24-15)

Heat 7.
Piotr Swiderski jumps the tapes and breaks them, race stopped and Swiderski disqualified, his place taken by reserve Richard Lawson for the re-run.
Re-run. Nicolas Covatti jumps the tapes this time, tapes still intact, all 4 back for the re-run with a warning from the Referee for Nico.
Re-run…. Take 3. Into bend 1 Chris Harris in 1st, Sebastian Ulamek in 2nd, Nicolas Covatti 3rd and Richard Lawson in 4th. Nicolas Covatti looking very under-powered is quickly overhauled by Richard Lawson on the back straight of lap 1. Nico makes a valiant effort and re-claims 3rd place out of bend 3 of the same lap, but he just can’t hold on to the position as Richard Lawson takes him again at the start of lap 2. A shared heat.

Harris, Ulamek, Lawson, Covatti

Result   3-3   (27-18)

Heat 8.
Ben Barker to take rider replacement for Martin Smolinski.
Richard Lawson, Josh Auty, Lewis Bridger and Ben Barker the 1 2 3 4 into bend 1. Richard Lawson takes 2nd place off Josh Auty as the travel the back straight of lap 1. And that was it… The Lakeside pair race off completely unchallenged the only change for the next 3 laps being an exchange in their 1st and 2nd places as they take their first maximum points from the meeting.
Brummies lead reduced to just 5 points.  saddi1234

Bridger, Lawson, Auty, Barker

Result   1-5   (28-23)

Heat 9.
Ben Barker takes the early lead, Davey Watt in 2, Danny King in 3 and Kevin Doolan in 4.
Danny King eases past Davey Watt on the home straight at the end of lap 1. The Brummie duo entertained the crowd with a fine display of team riding for the next 3 laps. Ben back to his winning ways after his hiccup in the last heat. Brilliant 5-1!  clap1  clap1  clap1

Barker, King, Watt, Doolan

Result   33-24   (33-24)

Heat 10.
Josh Auty takes reserve ride in place of Martin Smolinski.
Piotr Swiderski and Sebastian Ulamek making far better gates lead into bend 1, with Jason Doyle and Josh Auty in 3rd and 4th places. Jason Doyle quickly makes up ground and passes both Piotr Swiderski and Sebastian Ulamek on the back straight of lap 1. Sebastian Ulamek now in 3rd place is caught and passed by Josh Auty on the home straight at the end of lap 1. Meanwhile Piotr Swiderski is eroding the ground between him and Jason Doyle and succeeds in making the pass on the back straight of lap 2. Jason and Josh traded places a couple of times over the next lap but rather than make any advance on Piotr Swiderski they seemed to be impeding each others progress and nearly came unstuck as they clattered together out of the last bend of the race only just holding their positions in front of the fast approaching Sebastian Ulamek. And thankfully a shared heat!

Swiderski, Doyle, Auty, Ulamek

Result 3-3   (36-27)

Heat 11.
Kenneth Bjerre looking much sharper leads into bend 1, followed by Chris Harris, Nico Covatti and Lewis Bridger. Bridger riding wide around the outside passes Nico Covatti out of bend 2. And that was it… Chris Harris could get no headway behind Bjerre and likewise Nico Covatti behind Bridger. Only Lakeside’s 4th heat advantage but the Brummies lead now reduced to just 7 points.

Bjerre, Harris, Bridger, Covatti

Result   2-4   (38-31)

Heat 12.
Richard Lawson reserve ride replacing Kevin Doolan.
Danny King in 1st, Richard Lawson in 2nd, Josh Auty in 3rd and Sebastian Ulamek in 4th as they enter the 1st bend. Richard Lawson succeeds in passing Danny King on the back straight of lap 1 and simultaneously Josh Auty passes Danny King. The positions now… Richard Lawson in 1st, Josh Auty in 2nd, Danny King in 3rd and Sebastian Ulamek in 4th and also the result of the race for another shared heat.

Lawson, Auty, King, Ulamek

Result 3-3   (41-34)

Heat 13.
Jason Doyle moving at tapes, jumps the start, race stopped, all 4 back.
Re-run. Kenneth Bjerre in the lead out of bend 2, followed by Jason Doyle, Chris Harris and Davey Watt. No catching Kenneth Bjerre as he leads the race from start to finish, the track had now become quite dusty and I failed to notice where Jason Doyle and Chris Harris exchanged places… sorry!  However result the same… yet another shared heat.

Bjerre, Harris, Doyle, Watt

Result   3-3   (44-37)

Heat 14.
Reserve change, Josh Auty replaces Nico Covatti.
Piotr Swiderski, Ben Barker, Josh Auty and Richard Lawson into bend 2 lap 1.
For 3 laps it looked like being the 5th shared heat of the night, but Ben had other ideas. Sweeping wide around the outside with every turn, hugging the fence out of the 4th bend in breathtaking fashion and to the absolute delight of the crowd Ben finally got past Piotr Swiderski on the home straight as they entered the last lap.
Ben further delighted the crowd as he removed his helmet, was handed the mike by centre green presenter Chris Simpson and proceeded on his lap of honour chatting to the fans!  clap1  thumbsup1

Barker, Swiderski, Auty, Lawson

Result   4-2   (48-39)

Heat 15.
Nominated riders: Ben Barker, Jason Doyle, Kenneth Bjerre Davey Watt
Brummies off gates 2 & 4
As the dust settled the riders emerged out of bend 2 lap 1 with Kenneth Bjerre in 1st place, Ben Barker in 2nd, Jason Doyle in 3rd and Davey Watt in 4th. Jason Doyle passed Ben Barker on the back straight to give chase behind Kenneth Bjerre and Ben Barker seemed to take delight in covering the entire track while preventing Davey Watt the opportunity to pass him. And that was the result of the race, another shared heat but with the 9 point lead achieved in heat 14 Brummies take all 3 points from the meeting.  thumbsup1  thumbsup1

Bjerre, Doyle, Barker, Watts

Result 3-3   (51-42)

Meeting summary
As I expected Lakeside didn’t let us race away with a big lead, and for a while after heat 11 it was a bit hairy, the 7 point lead looked very precarious, just one little slip could have seen the Hammers steal a point out of the meeting. The rapidly drying track clearly not doing us any favours and Hammers taking full advantage of this. After a sluggish start Kenneth Bjerre was a fitting guest for Lakeside.
It was obvious that we missed Martin’s presence with only 5 points from the rider replacement rides. But once again all round performances and quality team riding was the order of the day!
Ben Barker showed exceptional courage and commitment, riding with ligament damage to his knee and still achieving 4 race wins from his 6 rides! In my opinion, just for entertainment value alone he was rider of the night, but add to that his courage and commitment and it’s easy to see why he was named Rider of the Night!
A glorious win in front of a highly delighted bumper crowd!

Jason Doyle 10+1 (5 rides)
Martin Smolinski r/r
Danny King 6+3
Ben Barker 13+1 (6 rides)
Chris Harris 9+1 (5 rides)

Sebastian Ulamek 3
Piotr Swiderski 5
Davey Watt 10 (5 rides including a 6 point tactical win)
