Birmingham County FA travel to the County Ground in Whetstone, just south of Leicester, next to the Leicester Lions RFC stadium, at two o’clock on Saturday 12th October. They play Leicestershire & Rutland FA in the first round of the County FA Youth Cup, a competition into its 68th year running. It was in fact set up in the 1944-45 season to give young footballers, who hadn’t signed for a club professionally, an opportunity to play competitive football. So the reward for the winners in this match? A place in the second round against Cheshire FA.
The man who has been Birmingham County FA manager for over a decade, is Martin Sweeney. Not to be confused with that film starring Ray Winstone. Sweeney has confirmed the flying squad for the match, with 20 players potentially featuring on Saturday. Most notably, there’s an inclusion for Jack O’Donnell, who is a member of the Birmingham City Development Squad, but he’s yet to make an appearance this season for the side.
Trayvon Powell, Kieran Nesbitt and Yohann Tsamas join up from Solihull Moors. Of those three, only Tsamas has made as much as a place on the substitutes bench for the Moors reserves at the beginning of the season, so all three are currently lacking in match practice. Also, Shane Grainger and Ben Bennett of Hednesford Town, may well be relatives of the Birmingham City legends!
Tickets are free, so get down to the County Ground and give the Birmingham FA side your support. Be there, or be a flat, quadrilateral shape with four right angles. Square.
